Needles in Public Spaces Report – December 2016

To:  Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors and the Santa Cruz City Council

Please find the Take Back Santa Cruz Needles Solutions Team Needles in Public Spaces (NIPS) report attached.  This is a log of citizen reports of needles found in public spaces for the last 49 months. The log was created as a reference so that someone can use the data to:

Total NIPS Finds for Reporting Period 49

For reporting period 49 (12/9/2016-1/8/17), 204 needles found in public spaces were logged. This count includes citizen reports, community group reports and reports by City workers.  32 needles were found by citizens and community groups; the other 172 needles were found by City workers.  

 Significant Finds For Reporting Period 49

 Needles were found at numerous Santa Cruz beaches:

o   Cowell Beach (1428N);

o   Sunny Cove (1427N);

o   Crow’s Nest Beach (1426N);

o   Capitola Village Beach (1421N);

o   Rio Del Mar Beach (1422N);

o   Main Beach (1414N, 1415N)

At Depot Park a child sat down on a bench which had a needle in a crack.  Fortunately the child was not stuck.
