When Jim Hart was elected and sworn in as Sheriff of Santa Cruz County, he vowed to include the community as an integral part of his team. Honoring his commitment, Sheriff Hart initiated the “Sheriff’s Advisory Team”. The advisory team meets with Sheriff Hart monthly to discuss law enforcement issues that are impacting the neighborhoods and rural areas of Santa Cruz County. The advisory team includes a diverse cross section of community members from all over Santa Cruz County, including one of the founding member’s, Analicia Cube of TBSC. Analicia is still very active with the team.
Analicia stated: “This year the team is focusing on 21st Century Policing recommendations from President Obama’s 6 pillars and 79 recommendations for Community Policing that were brought to law enforcement agencies across the country. Santa Cruz County was the first to adopt these recommendations. Deputy Chief Wilson of the Sheriff’s department is in charge of the implementation of 21st Century Policing and with his lead, the department has begun the process of implementing the recommendations in Santa Cruz County. The Chief regularly updates the progress of the workgroups to the advisory team.

Analicia further stated: “The community team has been a vital voice for citizens. Ultimately, it will take each and every one of us working together to create a safer community for both citizens and law enforcement. We are a team and we should view our relationship that way. Questions posed to the community advisory team have included: What can our law enforcement do to improve their relationship with the entire community. What does that look like to us? What can they do to build trust?”
We are grateful to have a Sheriff’s Department that has taken the time to not only adopt these recommendations but has actively involved our community as its partner.
